Chicken Recall Sparks Possible Life-Threatening Allergy Warning

The same grocery chain also recently issued a cookie recall for products connected with at least one death.

Story text
Regional grocery store chain Stew Leonard's has announced a recall of several chicken-based products and issued a potentially life-threatening allergy warning. The Stew Leonard's chain first began in 1969 with the opening of the Clover Farms Dairy shop in Norwalk, Connecticut. Over the decades since, it has grown to encompass seven supermarket locations across its native Connecticut, as well as New York and New Jersey, with the newest location opening in Paramus in 2019. The news of this chicken recall from Stew Leonard's comes only weeks after the chain issued another one that also came with a dire warning about allergies. Last month, the company recalled Florentine cookies that were sold at the Danbury and Newington locations that were found to contain undeclared peanuts. The company is also facing potential legal action from the family of 25-year-old New York City dancer Órla Baxendale, who died after suffering a severe allergic reaction from one of the cookies and going into anaphylactic shock. The incident took place at a social gathering in Connecticut where the cookies had been served. On Monday, the company announced a voluntary recall of several chicken salad and sliced chicken products, which were found to potentially contain undeclared milk ingredients, therefore posing a major risk to those with dairy allergies. The affected products were sold in the deli sections of Stew Leonard's stores between August 2022 and January 29 of this year. The list of products impacted by this recall are as follows: Sliced and Shaved Chicken; Sliced and Shaved Buffalo Chicken; Chicken Salad; Chicken Salad Sub Sandwich; Buffalo Chicken Salad; Boom Boom Chicken Salad; Cape Cod Chicken Salad; and, Lite Chicken Salad. The latter two chicken salad products were sold exclusively at the chain's Norwalk location.

The affected products were sold at all seven Stew Leonard's locations, including its flagship store in Norwalk as well as its other Connecticut stores in Danbury and Newington; its New York locations in East Meadow, Yonkers, Farmingdale; and its newest store in Paramus, New Jersey. "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. No illnesses have been reported to date." Customers who have purchased any of the purchased products and wish to return them can do so at the customer service areas in any Stew Leonard's location. Newsweek reached out to the company via email for comment on Tuesday morning.
