U.S. Coronavirus Cases Are Rising in These 15 States

Average daily new cases have been on an upward trend in several states in the Midwest, including Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.

Coronavirus cases in the U.S. have climbed past 5.5 million, according to the latest report Friday by Johns Hopkins University. Below we look at the states that have reported a rise in average daily case counts over a 14-day period from to August 6 to 19. Daily case counts below reflect a three-day moving average of daily new cases reported from August 6 to 19.

Hawaii

  • Day 1 (August 6): 174.67
  • Day 14 (August 19): 209.67
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 289 on August 14
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 136.67 on August 10
Average daily new cases in Hawaii have been on an upward trend in the latest 14-day period and have been increasing sharply from late July, after remaining mostly flat and relatively low throughout most of the outbreak from late March through most of July.

Illinois

  • Day 1 (August 6): 1,938.33
  • Day 14 (August 19): 1,955.67
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 2,082 on August 7
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 1,416.67 on August 10
Average daily new cases in Illinois have been mostly increasing over the latest two-week period, with a couple of large dips seen from August 7 to 10 and August 14 to 17. The average daily case tally has been mostly declining since hitting a peak of 2,977 on May 13, before mostly increasing from mid-June through August.

Missouri

  • Day 1 (August 6): 1,138.33
  • Day 14 (August 19): 1,042.67
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 1,451 on August 13
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 802.33 on August 7
The average daily case count in Missouri was reported to statistically be on an upward trend in the recent 14-day period, including a large increase seen from August 9 to 13. However, the figure was reported to be much lower than the peak levels seen in late July, when it hit 1,883 on July 29.

Kansas

  • Day 1 (August 6): 451.67
  • Day 14 (August 19): 431
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 596 on August 14
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 329.67 on August 17
Average daily new cases have been mostly increasing in the recent two-week period, peaking at 596 on August 14, the highest level recorded since the outbreak began. The average daily case count in the state mostly declined from around early May before mostly rising from early June through late July. It then mostly flattened out through early August.

Nebraska

  • Day 1 (August 6): 308.67
  • Day 14 (August 19): 261.67
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 332.33 on August 14
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 191.67 on August 16
The average daily case tally statistically increased in the recent 14-day period. But the figure has been mostly flattening out from around late July, after increasing a slightly sharper incline from early July. Average daily new cases were reported to be at much lower than the peak levels seen in April, when 497 average daily new cases were recorded on April 30.

Iowa

  • Day 1 (August 6): 603
  • Day 14 (August 19): 568
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 697.33 on August 14
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 328.67
Average daily new cases in Iowa were reported to be on an upward trend in the recent 14-day window, including a large increase seen from August 10 to 14 as well as from August 18 to 19. The average daily case count has been mostly rising from mid-June to early July before mostly decreasing through late July. It then slightly flattened out through early August.

Kentucky

  • Day 1 (August 6): 533
  • Day 14 (August 19): 645
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 835 on August 13
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 405 on August 10
The average daily case tally in Kentucky was reported to be on an upward trend in the recent two-week period, reaching 835 on August 13, the highest level since the outbreak began. Average daily new cases were reported to be mostly flattening out from around July 18 to early August. The averages rose on sharper incline from early to late July.

North Dakota

  • Day 1 (August 6): 131.33
  • Day 14 (August 19): 169
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 169 on August 19
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 108.33 on August 16
The average daily case tally in North Dakota has been mostly increasing in the recent two-week period, jumping on a sharp incline from August to 16 to 19. Following a brief dip in late May, average daily new cases have been mostly increasing through July and August.

South Dakota

  • Day 1 (August 6): 97.33
  • Day 14 (August 19): 110.33
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 125.67
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 70 on August 11
Average daily new cases in South Dakota have been on an upward trend in the latest 14-day period, the average daily tallies have not reached the peak levels reported back in May, when 204 average daily new infections were recorded. Average daily new cases mostly flattened out from late May to mid-July, before mostly increasing through early August.

Rhode Island

  • Day 1 (August 6): 116
  • Day 14 (August 19): 99.67
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 153.33 on August 18
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 31.67 on August 15
Average daily new cases in Rhode Island were reported a statistical increase in the recent 14-day period. However, the average daily case tally has been mostly flattening out from June through August, hovering at levels much lower than ones recorded back in April 429 average daily new cases were reported on April 24.

Connecticut

  • Day 1 (August 6): 70
  • Day 14 (August 19): 55
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 13 on August 18
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 38.33 on August 15
The average daily case count in Connecticut was statistically reported to be on an upward trend in the latest two-week window. However, it has been mostly declining from April 21, when it reached a peak of 1,502, before mostly flattening from late June through late July. The figure then briefly increased and dropped through early August.

Alaska

  • Day 1 (August 6): 47.33
  • Day 14 (August 19): 70.33
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 98.67 on August 15
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 47.33 on August 6
Average daily case counts in Alaska have been on an upward trend in the recent two-week period and mostly increasing from around late June. However, daily new cases peaked at lower levels than they did from late July to August 1 when the average daily case tally reached its highest level at 134.

Wyoming

  • Day 1 (August 6): 38.67
  • Day 14 (August 19): 42
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 56 on August 15
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 12 on August 11
Average daily new cases in Wyoming have been mostly increasing over the latest 14-day period. A large increase was recorded from August 11 to 15, reaching peak levels reported back in late July, when the average daily case count also hit 56 on July 23. The figure mostly flattened out from late April and May before mostly increasing from June to August.

Maine

  • Day 1 (August 6): 13
  • Day 14 (August 19): 18.67
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 27 on August 16
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 8 on August 10
Average daily new cases in Maine were reported to be on an upward trend in the latest 14-day window, including a large rise seen from August 10 to 16. However, the average daily case count has been on a slightly declining trend from May 21, when 69 average daily new cases were recorded, through early August.

Vermont

  • Day 1 (August 6): 5.67
  • Day 14 (August 19): 3.33
  • Highest daily case count in 14-day period: 10.33 on August 14 and 15
  • Lowest daily case count in 14-day period: 3.33 on August 6
Average daily case counts in Vermont have been mostly on an upward trend in the latest 14-day period, with average daily new cases dipping from August 15 to 19. The average daily case tally remained mostly flat through May before increasing sharply from late May to early June. It dropped sharply through mid-June before mostly flattening out again through early August.
