WHO is urging countries to expand newborn screening so that treatable congenital conditions can be identified before they cause avoidable harm.

Story text

WHO is urging countries to expand newborn screening so that treatable congenital conditions can be identified before they cause avoidable harm.

A new report highlights conditions such as congenital hypothyroidism, sickle-cell disease and hearing impairment. Access remains uneven: some countries screen for dozens of conditions, while others lack even a basic programme.

The agency recommends starting with conditions that are local priorities and can be effectively managed, then expanding as capacity improves. Screening must connect with confirmatory diagnosis, treatment and long-term support. Examples from several countries show how these services can be integrated into routine care and national health coverage.
