WHO has issued its first global guidelines on obesity among children and adolescents, calling for accessible, continuing care suited to young people and their families.
The agency estimates that 170 million people aged 5–19 were living with obesity in 2024. Its guidance supports structured approaches that combine nutrition, physical activity and behavioural support.
Care should account for age, mental health and the risk of stigma. The recommendations also consider supervised digital support where appropriate. The focus is on sustained, supportive services rather than isolated weight targets, recognizing that children’s health is shaped by families, communities and wider living conditions.
