Story text

Researchers in China have developed a robotic research system that connects artificial intelligence with experiments to speed the development of materials for demanding marine conditions.

The Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering describes a workflow linking material design, preparation, testing and feedback. Experimental failures are retained as useful training information, allowing subsequent proposals to reflect what the laboratory has already learned.

According to the institute, the approach has supported the development of cermet materials and drilling components for deep-sea work. The project illustrates a growing role for automated laboratories, where software proposes candidates and physical experiments test whether their predicted performance holds up.
