A tourist has left the internet in stitches with her attempt to be like an influencer in a vacation video.
TikTok user @emmagrace.myers shared a video on July 14, showing the moment she tried to gracefully walk into the tranquil waters of Lake Como. While her attempt started off well, her influencer moment was short-lived, as the TikToker slipped on the cobblestone steps and slid into the water.
The video has left social media users in hysterics, generating more than 2.8 million views and 256,000 likes on TikTok.
Text layered over the clip said, "There are many reasons why I am not an influencer, but this just became #1."
Newsweek has contacted @emmagrace.myers for comment via TikTok and Instagram. We could not verify the details of the case.
Every year, reports say, about 1.4 million tourists flock to Lake Como in Lombardy, northern Italy.
Given its natural beauty and array of activities for tourists to check out, there's no wonder so many people travel around the world to see the area for themselves. The lake has also provided the serene backdrop for Hollywood movies, including Casino Royale, House of Gucci and Ocean's Twelve.
As the area continues to attract visitors, not everyone is pleased about the constant flow of tourists. In April, The Times, a U.K. newspaper, reported that the mayor of Como City, Alessandro Rapinese, was considering the introduction of a Venice-style tourist tax to reduce the footfall.
In 2019, the Italian government approved a proposal for a 5-euro entry fee for tourists visiting Venice, but its rollout was delayed until spring 2024 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Venice municipal government selected 30 dates in the spring to test out the entry fee, with the goal of making it a permanent fixture.
Now, it appears more European cities are considering a similar tax to counter the effects of over-tourism, which can erode historic buildings and damage seabeds, via the countless boats that come into harbors. It has also made it increasingly difficult for locals to find affordable housing.
