No girls' trip is complete without a glass of wine and daily debrief in your hotel room—especially when you're traveling with your mom and grandma—but one trio found themselves in a predicament when they realized the crucial flaw in their plan. Account executive and podcast host Skylar Sorkin, 26, was on a girlie getaway with her mother, Linda Sorkin, and grandmother to Newport Beach, California, when their evening plans were interrupted. Faced with no alternatives, the mother and daughter were left with no choice but to make a strange request to the hotel's room service team, asking for "a man" to be sent up to their room. Skylar, who was sharing a room with her mom, had to come up with a solution quickly when the pair went to open a bottle of wine after a long day shopping, only to realize they'd bought a corked bottle, with no opener in sight.
Skylar Linda Sorkin Wine Bottle
Skylar and Linda Sorkin were looking forward to opening a bottle of wine in their hotel room when they realized a flaw in their plan. Speaking to Newsweek, Skylar shared the details behind their hilarious... @skylarsorkin/TikTok
Skylar told Newsweek, "My mama, grandma, and I had spent the day shopping at South Coast Plaza. So, of course, we were craving a well-deserved glass of Whispering Angel. Before our dinner reservations, especially when it's a special occasion and my mama and I are on a girls' trip, we always have a ritual: we get ready together with music blasting and a bottle of wine—it's our cherished tradition." The pair had planned to include Skylar's grandmother in their sweet tradition, as she continued, "My mama and I wanted two glasses for our room and had planned on bringing a glass to my grandma, who was getting ready in the room next door. We were excited to surprise her with a glass. We all love wine, as you can tell, ha ha! "When we first got the bottle, I wasn't thinking because I was too excited and totally thought it was one of those twist-off caps. So, when I realized it wasn't, I was crushed!" Skylar had a quick solution to their problem, and said, "I immediately called room service for a bottle opener, and they brought one up," however she hadn't accounted for the fact neither she nor her mother had the arm strength to use it. "I spent the next 35 minutes trying to open it myself because I didn't want to admit defeat," she said. "I'm pretty strong, so if I couldn't do it, and after I tried twisting it for 20 minutes, and my mama helping me couldn't open it up, I knew asking my grandma to try was definitely out of the question." This was the moment she realized "the only thing standing between you and your wine is a strong man," with Skylar explaining, "I was really wishing a) my boyfriend, b) my dad, or c) my brother were there, but they were all miles away. So, I had to swallow my pride and ask for what I needed—a strong man to save the day!" The realization resulted in a room service request we're sure the staff at Hyatt Newport Beach don't get often—but they were more than happy to oblige to after Skylar called the front desk to ask, "my mom and I are having a really hard time opening up the wine. We just requested the wine opener—is there any way I can request a man to come help us open it up?" The pair were soon saved by a knight in shining hotel uniform, as she shared, "When I called and asked, they cheerfully responded, 'Absolutely, a strong man coming your way!' Once he arrived at our door and saw my mom and me, our expressions of gratitude and the way we embraced his support, he was so excited to help. "We did feel a bit guilty for asking for help, but we made sure to really appreciate his assistance! In today's world, women can accomplish so much independently, but it's still important to show gratitude for anyone who lends a hand. This moment was a perfect example of that, and we had such a genuine, kind interaction with this stranger. It was a playful and cheeky moment! "We cheered him on, and it was wonderful to see his smile and feel his appreciation. Looking back, I wish we had offered him a glass of wine to share in the fun!"
