The research, dubbed the Clinical Trial for the Prevention of Coronavirus Infection in Health Workers (EPICOS) will study 4,000 health workers at 62 hospitals in 13 regions in Spain.
A Phase II clinical trial has begun investigating the drug in patients with mild-to-moderate forms of the disease.
Health experts estimate that the coronavirus is at least 10 to 20 times more deadly than the common seasonal flu.
The Columbia University map shows which parts of the country will exceed the number of beds they have for critical care over the next six weeks.
Lombardy's death toll is projected to reach nearly 10,000 in about three days, while the death count in New York is on track to reach nearly 12,600 in less than three days.
The decision not to disclose the number and location of bases hit may "leave many of our service members, military families, community members and more without the information they need to protect themselves," said Senator Murray.
While Spain and Italy have reported some of the highest number of cases, both nations have also recently seen a slight decline in the number of new infections.
The U.S. military is confronting the spreading coronavirus epidemic, with cases in 41 states and more than 100 bases.
"We have to be prepared that when the infections start to rear their heads again that we have in place a very aggressive and effective way to identify, isolate, contact trace," Dr. Anthony Fauci said.
The death count in the U.S. is poised to overtake that of Italy, which has reported nearly 17,700 fatalities to date, within the next few days.
Hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 cases have been confirmed since the outbreak started in late 2019, according to Johns Hopkins University.
"We are going in the right direction and we must not change our strategy in the least. The return to normality will be a gradual process," said top Italian health official Franco Locatelli.
While there have reportedly been almost twice as many recoveries as deaths so far in the country, the official number of recovered patients has yet to be released by the CDC.
From giants such Johnson & Johnson to smaller biotechs such as Inovio, more than a dozen companies are working to find a vaccine or treatment for the coronavirus pandemic.
As cases continue to soar in the country, a U.S. health expert on the COVID-19 task force, Dr. Anthony Fauci, warns up to 200,000 Americans could die from the virus.
